Shabaab Claims 3 Attacks in Puntland in One Week, Multiple Strikes on SNA Forces

The Shabaab al-Mujahideen Movement, al-Qaeda's (AQ) branch in Somalia, claimed three attacks in and around Bosaso in Puntland region in one-week, and multiple strikes on Somali National Army (SNA) forces elsewhere in the country.

The group's Shahada News Agency reported 14 attacks in messages published on December 4-11, 2017, and in another post, stated that three Somali soldiers surrendered to the Shabaab in Galguduud. According to the reports, in Puntland, fighters killed a police officer in Bosaso on December 4, stormed a military base in Af Urur on December 8, and attacked another military base in Galgala on December 11, using heavy weapons. Among other claimed operations, Shahada informed that the Shabaab affixed a sticky bomb to the vehicle of a Somali military officer in Galkayo, in Mudug region, on December 6, and stormed a base of kenyan forces in Afmadow.

The military spokesman for the al-Qaeda (AQ)-linked Shabaab al-Mujahideen Movement denied a claim by U.S. AFRICOM that an airstrike on a camp northwest of Mogadishu killed over 100 fighters.

The group's Shahada News Agency published a message on November 21, 2017, stating that the spokesman, Abdul Aziz Abu Musab, rejected the claim, and did not add any remark. In addition to that message, Shahada reported four attacks, one targeting Ethiopian Liyuu (Special) Police in Beledweyne, in Somalia's Hiran region, close to the Somalia-Ethiopia border, and two hitting AMISOM forces, and a fourth striking Somali soldiers.

The Shabaab al-Mujahideen Movement, al-Qaeda’s (AQ) branch in Somalia, reported the surrender to its “administration” of a soldier who worked with Ethiopian forces since 2011, and claimed multiple attacks on Kenyan soldiers and troops within the AMISOM mission.

The group’s Shahada News Agency posted reports on the attacks and surrender on its social media accounts on September 12-15, 2017. It stated on September 14 that Abdullah Jarir, an officer in the Somali National Army (SNA), surrendered in the city of Galhareeri in Galduduud, and provided his photo. In other messages, it reported Shabaab fighters storming Djiboutian and Burundian bases in Hiran and Middle Shabelle respectively, and ambushing Ugandan forces in Lower Juba, and also bombing a Kenyan military vehicle near the Somalia-Kenya border.
