IS Publishes Photos of Firing Rockets at U.S. Base East of Tal Afar

The Islamic State's (IS) al-Jazeera Province in northern Iraq published photos of fighters firing rockets at what it described as an American base east of the city of Tal Afar.

The five photos were posted on Telegram on August 18, 2017, and show fighters measuring the trajectory of the rockets and then firing seven of them. According to the captions, the attack targeted a U.S. base at the water project in al-Buwayr village. Five days prior, on August 13, the group claimed killing 4 "Crusaders" and wounding at least six others in an attack with Grad rockets on their positions in the same area.

Salah al-Din Province of the Islamic State (IS) in Iraq claimed killing 30 Iraqi forces and wounding 46 others in a four-man suicide raid north of the city of Baiji.

In a communique issued on August 16, 2017, the group reported that two Tajiki fighters, an Iraqi, and a Moroccan attacked a Federal Police headquarters and a headquarters of an Iraqi military division in the al-Musafi neighborhood, clashing with enemy forces and then detonating their explosive vests. It added that an IS reinforcement unit fired Grad rockets at one of the locations.

In an Arabic communique posted on its website on August 15, 2017, group spokesman Zabihullah reported that a fighter, “Shafiqullah,” detonated his vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) on a location where enemy forces were present and preparing to mount an offensive on its positions. He wrote: “Initial reports indicate that dozens of soldiers among the commando forces were killed and wounded, as well as intelligence and police elements, and a large number of tanks and vehicles were destroyed, and other military equipment were burned, as well”.

On the occasion of Pakistan’s 70th anniversary, the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) offshoot Jamat-ul-Ahrar argued that the country had not truly realized its independence and urged Muslims to join it and pursue Shariah-based governance.

In an English statement posted on Telegram on August 14, 2017, the group explained that the “true meaning” of the country’s foundation is monotheism, but its leaders diverted from that, being preoccupied with corruption. Afghan Taliban Video Focuses on Suicide Attacks Hitting U.S. Forces, NDS HQ in Jalalabad

The Afghan Taliban released a video focusing on suicide attacks, including the August 2014 six-man suicide raid at the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in Jalalabad, and the August 2016 suicide bombing on a U.S. convoy, also in the capital of Nangarhar province.

The 50 minute, 58 second, Pashto-language video, entitled, “Strike of Khaibar,” was produced by the group’s al-Emarah Jihadi Studios, and was posted on its website and Telegram channels on August 10, 2017. Footage shows the wills, training, and execution of attacks by fighters in Logar, Nangarhar, and Paktika. The attack on the American convoy is shown through computer-generated images, and according to a prior message, resulted in the killing of six soldiers. Regarding the six-man suicide raid, the Afghan Taliban had reported that it resulted in killing 71 Afghan intelligence agents and security forces, and wounding 83 others.

In consecutive messages, ‘Amaq News Agency reported Islamic State (IS) fighters targeted Egyptian police with explosives and in an ambush near Arish in North Sinai.

The two messages were disseminated on August 10, 2017, and each specified the attack took place the previous day. According to the first message, IS fighters ambushed Egyptian police in “Bawwabat Al Malaha,” west of Arish, killing four. The following report claimed IS disabled two armored vehicles and detonated two explosive devices in Sebeika and Al Bahr Al Shamali Street, west and north of the city, respectively.
