The group stated in a communique issued on December 27, 2017, that one day prior, fighters detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) on a military vehicle in Boni, near Dountza, destroying it and inflicting casualties among at least seven soldiers onboard.

Al-Qaeda’s Mali Branch Releases Video on June 2017 Raid in Bintagougou

Al-Qaeda’s (AQ) branch in Mali, Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen (NIM), released a video on its June 17, 2017, raid on a Malian military barracks in Bintagougou, west of Timbuktu.

The group’s al-Zallaqa Media Foundation issued the 7 minute, 53 second video on its Telegram channel on August 28. In its communique for the attack, NIM claimed killing and wounding nearly 20 Malian soldiers, and taking a military vehicle and a quantity of weapons and ammunition as war spoils. It added that one fighter, “Nasser al-Fulani,” was “martyred” during the operation. Footage shows commanders speaking before the operation, and fighters executing the attack and then moving about inside the captured barracks.
